We respectfully acknowledge that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) People first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources, but instead recognized Mi’kmaw and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.

Wow- its May already! Hopefully, the sun will be out more, and the buds on the trees will be blooming. May also means that it’s track and field time! We have a strong track team this year, and we wish them the best of luck at the district championships on May 14th and 15th. Spring also means softball season. Our softball team has also started to swing their bats and throw balls. We also wish them the best of luck in their season.

May is also a time where we are well into the planning for next year. Our grade 8 students will soon be doing their orientation and transition meetings for grade 9, and we are also planning for our incoming students from Chester District School and Aspotogan. Stay tuned for more information on these events.

Sincerely,

Jay Thomas, principal
Chester Area Middle School

2023/24 Cell Phone Policy

CAMS 2023/24 Cell Phone Policy

The staff at Chester Area Middle School want your child to be as focused on learning as much as possible during class time. Cell phones have proven to be the biggest distraction during class time over the past two years. To best support this, we have implemented the cell phone policy below:

1.     Cell phones and all other non-instructional-based electronic devices may be used on school grounds before school and during recess and lunch time.

2.     Cell phone use is prohibited in classrooms, bathrooms and school offices.

3.     During instructional time, cell phones must remain out of sight and in silent mode. They could be placed in lockers, backpacks, or another location away from students and their desks.

4.     Unless explicitly allowed by a staff member, headphones and other listening devices may only be used before school hours and during recess and lunch.

5.     If a student needs to place an emergency call during the day, they should request to go to the main office to use an office phone. If there are other emergencies, places will be provided.

IF YOU NEED TO CONTACT YOUR CHILD DURING THE SCHOOL DAY, PLEASE DO IT THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY- CALL THE SCHOOL AT (902) 275-2720

If students violate the school’s cell phone policy, the following may occur:

First Offense: The student’s cell phone will be confiscated by admin and held in the main office until the end of the school day. Before being allowed to pick up their cell phone at the end of the day, students must discuss and review the cell phone policy with an administrator.

Second Offense: The student’s cell phone will be confiscated and held in the main office until the end of the school day. The student’s parents will be contacted and informed of the refusal to follow the school’s cell phone policy. Student’s will receive a noon hour detention and be permitted to pick up the cell phone at the end of the day.

Third Offense: The student’s cell phone will be confiscated  and held in the main office. The student will receive several noon detentions and be permitted to pick up the cell phone at the end of the day.

Continued violations of the cell phone policy may result in the loss of cell phone privileges at the school during recess and lunch.
